The struggle with LoveCorp continues

ARCHANGEL:NEMESIS [S1E2] ::: FRIDAY is a free role-playing video game wherein you must survive the hardships of religion and puberty. Developed by team★CPU and published by MAVERSSOFT, this visual novel indie game lets you play as a teenaged girl struggling to balance her social life and strict family life.

As the sequel to ARCHANGEL:NEMESIS [S1E1], you can expect ARCHANGEL:NEMESIS [S1E2] ::: FRIDAY to have the same old stylized graphics of sprawling text over funky graphics. The visual and audio jumpscares come back here, too—although you can’t play the first episode in this game.

Between friends and family

ARCHANGEL:NEMESIS [S1E1] is an indie RPG visual novel that tells the story of 13-year-old Twigs, whose family was deeply tied to LoveCorp, the elite organization of their Church of Mother religion. Growing up, she had to learn everything about the family business and had been preparing to enter a new school that hinged on her religious studies. However, she’s not really too keen on this kind of life.

The first game only covers the events of Episode 1 and how Twigs was struggling between the religious examinations, her nightmares about a strange angel, and her conflicting relationship with her best friend. In Episode 2, the story-rich plot continues where the first game left off and features more psychological horror elements as the character tries to move on—ranging from dark and evocative animations to flashing images.

Everything else in the graphics and story is the same here, though. The low-budget-looking 3D assets for characters and backdrops return and the surprisingly well-crafted writing display over them without a proper textbox. This stylized look doesn’t detract from the horror jumpscares and only elevates the unease even further, with some new gameplay mechanics. It’s only too bad that the first episode is a separate game from this.

The horror is ever-present

All in all, ARCHANGEL:NEMESIS [S1E2] ::: FRIDAY is a great continuation of Twigs’ journey, as it plays up the drama even further and gets you hyped for the next installment. The stylized combo of low-quality graphics and compelling narrative is strangely effective, especially once the horror kicks in. However, you’ll have to get the other download for Episode 1 to refresh your memory of the plot.

PROS

  • Interesting character-style writing
  • Unique stylistic graphics
  • Engrossing plot
  • New gameplay mechanics

CONS

  • Episode 1 is a separate download from this game
